Shrink Plastic Earrings

Materials and Tools:

photograph or image
inkjet shrink plastic paper
2-1/2" cardboard circle template
fine point and thick point black permanent markers
2 earring hooks
2 jump rings or o-rings
jewelry pliers
1/8" hole punch
heat embossing tool
ruler
scissors
clear acrylic matte spray
computer and imaging software
cardboard or wood
printer
baby powder

Step 1

Steps:

1. Resize and print floral images onto inkjet shrink plastic paper. Let dry.

Step 2

2. Place the 2-1/2-inch cardboard circle template over an image and trace around the template with a fine point black permanent marker. Repeat for a second image. Cut out the two images.

Steps 3-5

3. Hole punch the images close to the top.

4. Place the shrink plastic image on a piece of cardboard or wood.

5. Sprinkle and rub in a small amount of baby powder on each side to prevent sticking.

Step 6

6. Shrink the plastic with a heat embossing tool. Hold the plastic down with the handle of a paintbrush. Move the gun around the plastic to avoid curling/sticking until the image reaches 1/2 to 1/3 original size. Flip it over and heat it to make sure the shrink plastic stays as flat as possible.

Steps 7-8

7. Let the shrink plastic image cool. Go around the edges and the back with a thick point black permanent marker.

8. Spray the front and back of the shrink plastic with a few light coats of acrylic spray. Let dry.

Step 9

9. Attach a jump ring or o-ring through the hole of each image with jewelry pliers. Attach the earring hooks.
