dark gray sock
light gray sock
striped sock
2 knit gardening gloves
sharp fabric scissors
polyester thread and upholstery thread
straight pins
sewing machine
hand needles
5-inch doll needle

Steps:
1. Cut the cuff above the heel and toe from the light gray sock. Cut the toe portion into two parts down the center from the tip of the toe toward the cut end to make two legs. Cut open the tube from the cuff part on one side for the top of the head.
2. Cut the cuff above the heel on the striped sock. Cut open one side of the tube for the body.
6. Cut the toe from the striped sock close to the heel and cut it into two pieces down the center for the ears.
7. With right sides together, pin the parts together and stitch them on the sewing machine leaving an opening for stuffing.
8. Turn the sock animal right side out and stuff with polyester fiberfill. Hand sew the opening together.
9. Soft-sculpt the mouth on the stupid creature with a 5-inch doll needle.
10. Sew buttons for eyes onto Murphy's Original Stupid Creature.
John Murphy, from Asheville, N.C., was a novice sewer attempting to make a traditional sock monkey when he came up with this lovable creature. His friends got a kick out of his whimsical sock creatures—he started taking sewing classes to perfect the sock creatures that would eventually take over as his main crafting medium—although already trained in ceramics.
