Day Lily Paper

Carol Duvall Show : Episode CDS-235 -- More Projects »
Another great project is making paper from day lilies. Give it a try!

Steps:
  1. Dry the day lilies until they are brittle and almost breakable.
  2. Cut the leaves every 1 inch.
  3. Put leaves in a pot half full of water, then add more water on top of leaves. You want to make sure all of the leaves are covered with water.
  4. Cook the leaves for 40 minutes on medium heat. Be sure not to burn them.
  5. Drain and cool.
  6. Put about a cup of leaves into a blender and fill the blender with water, almost to the top.
  7. Put the lid on the blender and process until leaves look well blended.
  8. Pour mixture in a shallow rectangular pan and add more water (about a quart or quart and a half).
  9. Stir the mixture to make sure there are no lumps, and with a piece of screening from anything you may have around the house, dip the screen in water and slide it around.
  10. Push the screen down to the bottom of the pan and then - carefully - lift the screen out of the water. Let the water drain from the "paper" particles on the screen, and then turn over the screen on a towel.
  11. While the screen is still upside down, pat it with a towel to get all of the excess water out.
  12. Once again, flip the screen and towel over together. Remove the towel from the "paper" and gently remove pape from screen. Let dry.
