Another great project is making paper from day lilies. Give it a try!
Steps:
- Dry the day lilies until they are brittle and almost breakable.
- Cut the leaves every 1 inch.
- Put leaves in a pot half full of water, then add more water on top of leaves. You want to make sure all of the leaves are covered with water.
- Cook the leaves for 40 minutes on medium heat. Be sure not to burn them.
- Drain and cool.
- Put about a cup of leaves into a blender and fill the blender with water, almost to the top.
- Put the lid on the blender and process until leaves look well blended.
- Pour mixture in a shallow rectangular pan and add more water (about a quart or quart and a half).
- Stir the mixture to make sure there are no lumps, and with a piece of screening from anything you may have around the house, dip the screen in water and slide it around.
- Push the screen down to the bottom of the pan and then - carefully - lift the screen out of the water. Let the water drain from the "paper" particles on the screen, and then turn over the screen on a towel.
- While the screen is still upside down, pat it with a towel to get all of the excess water out.
- Once again, flip the screen and towel over together. Remove the towel from the "paper" and gently remove pape from screen. Let dry.
