The Carol Duvall Show cameras focus on paper artist Karen Simmons, who was a weaver for 20 years before she started making paper vessels. Simmons got started when she noticed all the left-over fiber on the floor after doing her weaving work and wondered if there wasn't something that could be done with it. So she started experimenting with paper, and this fabulous artwork is the result.

Simmons now uses plants from outside her basement door as fiber for her paper. To make the paper, she runs the plants through a leaf shredder, cooks them down to fiber and cellulose, then runs them through a blender. Her paper press is a refurbished hydraulic jeweler's press.

Once Simmons has made the paper she creates vessels that are inspired by nests and animal habitats. She works on the outside of a mold so that she can create more complex pieces, then collapses the mold from inside.
