Guest Sandi Reinke from Loose Ends demonstrates how to make these cool clocks.
Woodland Clock
Materials:
rustic wood frame w/cardboard backing
Loose Ends birch bark paper #06507
Loose Ends spaghnum moss #50175 & reindeer moss #07385
Loose Ends black lichen #68471
Loose Ends polished beach pebbles #77130
clockworks kit
small and large twigs
glue gun and glue sticks
glue stick
Quick Grab glue
Steps:
1. Distress the birch bark paper and glue it to the frame's cardboard backing with a glue stick (figure A).
2. Cut a 1/4-inch circle out of the center of the backing. This is the face of your clock (figure B).
3. Cut two small twigs to fit the clock's hands and fasten the twigs to the hands of the clock with Quick Grab glue. Note: Make sure the twigs are slim enough for the hands to pass over each other.
4. Glue larger twigs to the frame (figure C).
5. Place the clock face into the rustic frame and insert the clockworks (figure D).
6. Use hot glue to secure the four pebbles at the 12 o'clock, 3 o'clock, 6 o'clock, and 9 o'clock positions.
7. Glue the mosses and the black lichen to the opposite corners of the rustic frame, also with hot glue (figure E).
8. Insert the battery and hang.
Paris Retro Clock
Materials:
12" circle of Plexiglas with a 1/4" hole drilled in the center
Loose Ends Parisian Apartment Wallpaper black-and-white check #27159
Loose Ends Parisian Apartment Wallpaper black-and-white pinstripe #27161
Loose Ends Parisian Apartment Wallpaper black-and-white spotted #27155
5' of Loose Ends 6mm Egyptian gold cord #59475
clockworks kit w/face and hands
paintbrush
white craft glue
scissors
ruler
glue gun with glue sticks
Mandalay cloud vanilla paper #14278 (optional)
Steps:
1. To create the background of the clock face, cut a 15" x 7-1/2" half-circle out of the black-and-white checked paper.
2. Cut a 15" x 6-1/2" half-circle out of the black-and-white pinstripe paper.
3. Cut one 2" x 15" strip of the black-and-white spotted paper.
4. With a small brush, paint the face of the clock base with white craft glue.
5. Apply the half-circle of checked paper to the bottom half of the base, leaving one inch overlapping the outer edges.
6. Apply the pinstripe half-circle to the top of the base, aligning the flat edge along the edge of the checked paper at the center of the clock base. This also should overlap one inch on the edges (figure F).
7. Spread white craft glue on the underside of the strip of spotted paper and place it right on top of the pinstripe paper, aligning the edge along the check paper at the center. Overlap the ends of the strip one inch on each side.
8. Clip the overlapping paper edges into one-inch tabs. Turn the clock over and glue the overlapping pieces onto the backside of the clock. Cutting the paper into tabs will help it better fit around the curved edge of the clock (figure G).
9. The clock face may be used from the kit; we copied the clock face on to the cloud vanilla paper on a photocopier (figure H).
10. Glue the face to the center of the clock base.
11. Cut through all layers of paper to match the 1/4-inch hole in the Plexiglas.
12. Glue the Egyptian cord to the edge of the clock base with a small bead of hot glue (figure I). Turn the ends to the backside of the clock and glue down.
13. Glue the cord around the face of the clock with hot glue. Carefully weave the ends together and glue down.
14. Cut a 12-inch circle of black-and-white spot paper to cover the raw edges on the back of the clock. Cut a 1/4-inch hole in it to match the hole in the center, and glue it in place with white craft glue (figure J).
