Jeremy Shafer demonstrates how to fold a tiny suit, both coat and pants, using origami paper. The basic design requires nine folds, but a couple of extra folds make this suit stand up for display.

Materials

square sheet of paper with one colored side and one white side - for best results, use specially packaged origami paper available from local arts and crafts stores

Steps

  1. Begin with the white side of the paper facing up. Valley fold and unfold both ways in half.
  2. Valley fold the sides to center so they overlap by approximately a millimeter.
  3. Valley fold and unfold. Turn the paper over so the color side is facing up.
  4. Valley fold to the creases made in step 3.
  5. Valley fold the flap down. The fold is just above the bottom edge.
  6. Valley fold the sides exactly to the center.
  7. Valley fold and unfold through all layers. Turn over.
  8. Valley fold the corners to the sides to form the collar. These folds extend just down to the existing crease.
  9. Mountain fold the top behind. It should end up just short of the bottom of the jacket.
  10. Holding the model as illustrated, use thumb to roll out paper to form an arm. Repeat to form the arm on the other side.
  11. Mountain fold the shoulders behind.
  12. Thin out the sides of the pants using mountain folds.
  13. Mountain fold the inseam of the pants. The easiest way to do this is to pinch the folds through all layers, then fold behind just the top layer.
  14. The suit is ready. To make it stand up, turn the model over.
  15. Holding down the back of the jacket with one hand, slide out paper from underneath and make the flap stick straight out.
  16. Repeat step 15 on the other side. For the sake of aesthetics, close the flaps on the jacket.
  17. Turn the model over and shape it as desired.
