Maraya Hunter grew up in Michigan where she was surrounded by trees. She developed a fondness for trees that she's carried with her all of her life. Hunter was taking a paper mache course and had just learned that the art form was not limited to paper, when, while out for a walk, she discovered the Malaluca tree and its incredible bark. Hunter incorporates the bark into her layered paper mache masks. The mask layers consist of a plaster shape, a layer of paper mache, a layer of pulp, a layer of polymer clay, then a final layer of Malaluca tree bark.
