Figure B
Guest Grace Taormina demonstrates how to create tiles using cardboard coated with a new ultra-thick embossing enamel and rubber stamps.

Materials:

assorted rubber stamps
pigment inks in assorted colors
Suze Weinberg's Ultra-Thick Embossing Enamel - clear, gold, black
pigment powders
rub-on metallic pastes
1/8-inch thick cardboard
craft knife
metal ruler
embossing heat tool
silicone glue

Steps:

  1. Use a sharp knife and metal ruler to cut cardboard into three-inch squares.
  2. Apply embossing ink to the entire surface of one side of a cardboard square. Sprinkle with embossing powder (figure A) then melt with an embossing heat tool. Repeat twice more.
  3. Before melting the third application of embossing powder, ink one of the rubber stamps with pigment ink, then set aside. While the third application of embossing powder is still hot, impress it with the inked stamp (figure B). The embossing powder solidifies instantly so that the stamp can be removed easily. The ink acts as a protective lubricant for the rubber stamps.
  4. For a metallic look, brush the embossed surface with powdered pigment. To intensify the metallic sheen, rub on some metallic paste or glitter glue.
  5. Repeat steps on remaining cardboard squares, using various combinations of stamp images and media to achieve a range of effects.
Use the cardboard squares in a variety of ways:
  • Frame singles or groups of squares to create wall art.
  • Attach a pin to the back to create jewelry.
  • Glue the cardboard squares to a tabletop to create one-of-a-kind furniture.
