Jitney tote bag
Between work and children, we have a lot to carry around, and a stylish tote bag is almost a necessity. Guest Tammy O'Connell and sewing expert Susan Kahlje demonstrate how to make one out of leather and linen. Styles of tote bags are as individual as you are, so consider your needs and lifestyle when you plan your bag. You are the designer, deciding which features and fabrics work best for you!

Materials:

home decor strength fusible bond
two leather tote bag handles
sturdy linen fabric
lining
faux leather (for bottom)
zippers (optional for closure, organizer)
plastic canvas for stiffening
hook and loop tape (optional for organizer 's hidden pocket)
nylon webbing (for structural reinforcement)
vinyl (optional for umbrella, coffee mug/water bottle pockets)
piping (for outside pocket)
twin needle
thread

Figure C
1. Fuse home decor fusible bond to the linen to reinforce the tote bag (figure A).

2. Center the faux leather piece on the linen and stitch one side. Pin the top side, leaving the center of the faux leather open (figure B).

3. Interface one side of the outer pocket. Find the center and fold in 1 inch. Match points to the center to form the triangular pocket. Press and add piping to reinforce the top edge (figure C). Pin and stitch along the edge of the pocket to secure the piping.

4. Insert the bottom of the pocket piece and tuck the piping into the opening from step 2, pushing in about 1/2 inch on each side to allow room to insert items into the pocket. Pin and stitch using a twin needle.

5. Attach nylon webbing (straps) to the lining.

Organizer pocket suggestions:

- cell phone pocket: reinforce by topstitching the edges; position onto the lining; pin in place.
- umbrella sleeve: line with vinyl; position onto the lining; pin in place.
- drink/water bottle holder: reinforce the top with a piece of vinyl; position onto the lining; pin in place.
- organizer pocket: add desired pockets; place under zipper flap; pin in place; stitch all pockets to lining.

Tip: If pockets are attached at the edges, sew at the same time side seams are sewn together.

6. With the right sides together, sew the side seams.

7. To create the box bottom, invert the bag and force the fabric from the outside and inside into the corner, measuring 3-1/2 inches from each side (figure D). Match the gussets and stitch straight across; trim and serge. Do not stitch pockets.

8. Turn the bag and place the plastic canvas between the lining and the outer fabric to the box bottom for added reinforcement.

9. Position and pin the zipper panel (cuff) with the teeth down to the lining only, tucking the straps out of the way. Sew the zipper panel to the lining.

10. Position the zipper panel inside, and fold the outer fabric 5/8-inch down to where the fabric meets. As you come to the webbing, attach the straps and fold the webbing inside the bag; pin and stitch.
