Hair Scrunchies

Carol Duvall Show : Episode CDS-173 -- More Projects »
Beauty consultant Suzanne Beltramo joins Carol to demonstrate how to make custom hair scrunchies.

Materials:

fabric-covered elastic for ponytails
1/4 yard of fabric(s)
pinking shears
optional: glue

Steps:
  1. Cut the fabric into strips 9" long and 2" wide, using as many different types of fabric as desired.
  2. Tie the strips around the fabric-covered elastic.
  3. Cut out objects from the fabric pattern(s) and glue them to the ends of some of the strips, if desired
Tips:
  • Cutting the strips with pinking shears will help to prevent the fabric from unraveling.
  • Store the scrunchies on the cardboard core of a roll of paper towels or wrapping paper.
  • Use the scrunchies as bows on packages - they're decorative and also make an additional gift.
Another way of creating custom hair scrunchies results in a very different outcome:

Materials:

1/4 yard of fabric
8" length of braided elastic, 1/4" wide
scissors
sewing equipment

Steps:
  1. Cut a 4 1/2"-wide strip of fabric to desired length.
  2. Fold the fabric in half lengthwise, right sides together, and stitch a 1/2" seam on the long edge.
  3. Turn the fabric tube right side out. Insert the elastic through tube, and stitch the ends of the elastic together securely.
  4. Fold the fabric under 1/4" on one end, and slide it over the opposite end.
  5. Slip-stitch the ends of the fabric together, being careful not to catch the elastic in the stitching.
