Aprons
Sew Perfect : Episode SEW-321 -- More Projects » Materials:
7/8 yard of fabric
Heat 'N' Bond Vinyl
matching braid
roller presser foot
cardboard
80/12 needle
Steps:
- Trace an apron design on paper or cardboard. Use an old apron as your guide.
- Cut out your fabric according to the pattern. Cut a piece of Heat 'N' Bond Vinyl the same size. Place the fabric right side up to attach the Heat 'N' Bond Vinyl.
- The vinyl coating is perfect for aprons because you can just wipe off any splatters or spills, but you could also make this apron without the vinyl coating.
- Peel off the backing to the Heat 'N' Bond and place the sticky side of the coating on the fabric. Place the backing you just peeled off on top of the coating and press with a warm iron.
- Press with iron for about eight seconds on each section of apron and peel off the backing when entire apron is covered. Allow the coating to dry.
- Now it's time to hem the edges of your apron. Ironing these hems could melt the vinyl coating. Instead fold over the top edge of the apron about 1/4 inch and finger press. Fold over again and pin in place.
- You'll also need a roller presser foot to help guide the vinyl through the sewing machine without sticking. For best results, use an 80/12 needle for this project.
- Sew the top edge and repeat the hemming process for the bottom and both sides of the apron. Do not hem the arm parts of the apron.
- Fold the braid in half. Most braids will be folded in half lengthwise. Slip the apron fabric in between this fold. If your braid does not have a fold, simply fold the braid in half and press with an iron.
- Decide how long you want the tie to be from one edge of the apron to the back, and pin the braid at the side edge of the apron.
- Without cutting the braid, continue pinning the braid up the armhole to the top of the apron. Do not cut braid.
- Decide how long you need the neck loop to be, then pin on the other side of the top apron. Continue down the armhole as described above, and pin at the bottom edge of the armhole.
- Measure the length of the tie you made at the beginning, and cut that exact length from the braid on the other side.
- Next, start at the end of the first tie you made and sew the two braid folds together. Continue sewing up the armholes, around the neck, down the other armhole and the other tie.
