Turn your window from basic to beautiful by creating a custom swag. A window swag can hang on a backboard, various holders or on a rod with finials. When working with a standard 36-inch window, try this idea.
Materials:
four yards of fabric
four yards of lining fabric
matching thread
two swag holders or a rod
Steps:
- Before taking any measurements, put up the rod hardware. Decide how far down the swag should hang and measure this distance to determine the length to cut the fabric.
- Measure the space between the hardware brackets to determine the width to cut the fabric.
- Lay the fabric and lining out (if they are the same width, you can cut them at the same time.) Cut them to the measurements determined in steps 1 and 2.
- Measure down 45 inches and cut the fabric at an angle going from the 45-inch mark back out to the bottom corner of the fabric. This goes for the lining, too. Do the same on the other end.
- Pin the right sides of the fabric and lining together.
- Sew the pieces together, hand-walking two stitches around each corner. Leave a 10-inch opening.
- Press the seams back on themselves. Clip the excess fabric, especially at the corners.
- Turn the fabric right side out and sew the opening shut.
- Press the edges all the way around.
- Establish the center of the swag and mark it with a safety pin to establish where the center it is moved about the window.
- Gather the swag in 4-inch folds. Wrap masking tape on each end and in the middle to save time on the ladder. Slide the swag onto the hardware and fluff. To add fullness to the swag, crumple some newspaper and stuff it into the center back of the swag. Another great idea is to sew a tube of fabric to cover a rod if you use one with your swag. Mark the tube of fabric twice the length of the rod and scrunch it up evenly on the rod.
