Table Runner

Materials:

tapestry fabric
polished-cotton fabric for background
decorative tassel

Steps:

  1. Cut tapestry fabric at size 9" x 54". Cut polished-cotton fabric at size 17" x 54."
  2. Place the tapestry and polished-cotton pieces right sides together and match the raw seams. Pin in place. There should be a lot of polished-cotton fabric loose in the middle. With right sides together, stitch down both sides lengthwise leaving a 6" opening for turning about 12" from one end.
  3. Next, center the top panel (the extra fabric in the middle) and press the edges. Fold the runner in half lengthwise and pin. Unfold and mark 1/2" in from the pin.
  4. Along each long edge, mark 8" from the end of the runner. With a ruler and chalk, connect edge markings with center marking to create the pointed or triangular ends.
  5. Pin the tassels inside the two pieces of fabric and stitch on marked lines.
  6. Next, turn runner right side out and press. Slipstitch opening closed.

Place Mat

Materials:

polished-cotton for the background fabric
tapestry fabric for the top piece
fleece, cardboard for pattern
size 14 needle
clapper

Steps:

  1. Make a pattern out of cardboard by cutting a rectangle shape size 13" x 19". Mark 3-1/2" from each corner. Using a ruler, connect the 3-1/2" marks diagonally. Next, cut on those lines. You now have a standard place mat shape.
  2. Using the pattern, cut a piece out of the tapestry fabric and polished-cotton fabric, also some fleece. The fleece will protect the mat from heat. Take one end of the tapestry fabric and press one corner in 1/2". Repeat for the polished-cotton fabric. Do not fold in the fleece. Instead cut off 1/2" on the same end.
  3. Place the two pieces of fabric right sides together, then place fleece on top, with all folds and cuts aligned. Flip fabric over and pin on tapestry side; this will make sewing easier.
  4. Use a size 14 needle and sew all the way around until you get to the other fold. Next, trim the fleece very close to the sewn line. On all corners, trim a notch so it will turn better. Press seams on themselves; turn right sides out. Press fabric and hit with a clapper (a wooden object used to help keep the heat from the iron inside the fabric fibers). Close opening with machine or by hand.
