Carol creates four sets of three pillows each that present a message as a group. She uses a yard of felt fabric for the fronts and backs of the pillows, 3/4 yard of 1/4" cord for welting, and 2" covered buttons and tassels. The messages on the three pillow sets are: "Twinkle, twinkle, little star," "Yippi ki yay," "C'est la vie," and "Just do it." She also shows how to make a fun envelope pillow.
Message Pillows
Materials:
newspaper
felt
sewing equipment
decorative paints
Steps:
- Make a pattern out of newspaper, and cut out three pieces of felt, the front and middle pieces the same size, and the back piece 3-4 inches wider than the other two.
- Decorate your fabric first in case you don't get the pieces sewn together perfectly.
- Cut out the center of the middle piece, and cut the back piece in half from top to bottom.
- Overlap the two sides of the back piece in the middle so that they match the shape of the other two pieces and sew the three together a few inches in from the edge of the fabric.
- Cut out designs on the trim of the front piece to let the color of the middle piece show through.
Envelope PillowsSteps:
- Select the size of your pillow, and cut out four identical pieces of fabric one square inch larger than the size you've selected (one for the front, one for the back, and two for the flap).
- Design the shape of the flap, cut it out, and sew. You may want to sew in some piping for the edge of your flap or insert some iron-on batting to give it body.
- Place the finished flap (turned right-side-out) between the front and back of the pillow case (turned wrong-side-out), and sew. Be sure to leave enough of the pillow unfinished to turn it right-side-out and stuff it.
Tip: When using a pillow form for stuffing, measure it by hand before cutting your material.
