Project designed by Pat DeSantis.
Materials:
oversized denim shirt
3 yards of Venice lace
1/4-inch width masking tape
tracing paper or gift wrap tissue paper
decorative fabric scraps - upholstery fabrics work well
fabric glue
needle and thread
Steps:
- Cut the shirttails from the shirt to square it off at the bottom. Cut at the point just above the scallop in the hem side.
- Turn up and hem either by sewing or gluing.
- Position shirt down on a flat work surface. Outline pocket, half the yoke and half the collar with 1/4-inch width masking tape. Trace the tape on half the collar, the pocket and half of the back yoke onto tracing paper and cut out the tracings to make patterns. Remove the tape from the shirt.
- Pin patterns onto scraps of decorative fabric and cut each one, leaving a 1/2-inch seam allowance. Remember, collar and yoke are half patterns so position those patterns on a fabric fold before cutting.
- Fold collar, pocket and back yoke fabric pieces in half to make sure each side matches.
- Place new collar, pocket, and back yoke fabric pieces over original shirt, fold back seam allowance, then glue, fuse or sew into place. The collar will require some easing in.
- Add Venice lace at the shirt hem, pocket top (as a flap) and over the cuffs.
- Add fancy button covers and a tassel at the neck to finish.
Tips:
- Since most types of Venice lace are readily available in white or off-white, use fabric dye to color the lace as desired.
- Two or more coordinating fabrics look good on the shirts. Try mixing plaid and floral prints for added interest. Look for small pieces of decorative fabric on closeout tables in local fabric stores.
