Figure B
Melanie Royals of Royal Design Studio joins Kathi Cardinalli to demonstrate an easy way to add elegance to a room. It involves metallics stenciled onto silk to create an Italian Renaissance look.

Materials:

stencil
raw-silk panels (dark color)
stencil brush
metallic paints
acrylic paint with textile medium added (one part medium to two parts paint)
paper towels
artists' brush

Steps:

  1. Put stencil on top of silk.

  2. Use stencil brush to put small amount of black paint on entire stencil pattern.

  3. Shift the stencil on the diagonal about 1/8 inch to create a drop-shadow effect. Go in any direction, but be consistent.

  4. Brush on metallic gold paint with textile medium added (an opaque metallic), on the same stencil (figure A).

* Optional: Handpaint highlights on the side opposite the shadow effect that has been created (figure B), using a slightly thinned off-white color (thinned with medium).
