Instructions provided courtesy of quilt artist Colleen Wise.

Materials and Tools:

dark sheer fabric
cotton fabrics for kibble
background fabric
paper-backed fusible web, such as Wonder Under or Steam-A-Seam
appliqué press sheet

Note: As the glue on the fusible web melts, it oozes through the sheer fabric. So be mindful of this as you don't want to gunk up the bottom of your iron--or fuse your sheer fabric to your ironing board!

Instructions provided are for kibbles only.

Steps:

1. Iron paper-backed fusible web to the backs of the cotton fabrics. Remove the paper backing.

2. Iron paper-backed fusible web to the sheer fabric. Use an appliqué press sheet, and use a lower iron temperature to prevent melting of the sheer fabric. Remove the paper backing.

3. Place fused sheer over fused fabric, both fabrics right sides up.

4. Cut both fabric and sheer at the same time to create identical pieces. Free-cut kibble-shaped pieces.

5. Lay out each sheer piece, fusible-side down, on background fabric, with its corresponding cotton kibble piece on top and slightly above and to the right of it. The edge of the sheer shadow should visible on the lower and left edge of the cotton piece. The shape of the kibble piece and its shadow should be identical, just offset.

6. Fuse in place, using an appliqué press sheet.
