Project by Shimoda from New York, N.Y.
After realizing her dream of learning to make jewelry, Shimoda has begun reaching a new goal, that of learning bookmaking. In this project, she shares a new chapter with her vibrant and clever felt art book.
Materials:
felt
two-strand floss: pink, purple, light purple, dark purple, orange
orange beads
closure button
red floss
red beads
eyelet beads
round white tags
inkpad
stipple brush
paint
black and white chord
glue
yarn
Steps:
1. For the front of the book (purple): Cut orange 1-1/2" x 9" felt. Embroider with two-strand pink floss.
2. Sew red 1/2" x 3" felt onto the orange with purple floss and orange beads. Sew the orange piece on the purple 6" x 9" with purple and orange beads. Sew closure button on the orange.
3. Embroider small lines all over the yellow piece with two strands of light purple.
4. Embroider over those lines with the dark purple, making X's (it does not need to be every light purple line, maybe every other one).
5. For the pockets: Sew the various shape felt and buttons on the pockets with orange strand floss. Sew the pockets onto the yellow felt with red floss and red beads. Sew on beads with words with orange floss beads.
6. Back to the yellow felt: Punch four 3mm holes into the yellow felt. Inset and hammer the eyelets.
7. To decorate tags: Color round white tags with an inkpad and stipple brush, on both sides. Paint the rim of the tag with dark paint. Also put a little dab on the inside (both sides). Write your sayings in the tag (both sides).
8. Cut black and white chord into four equal pieces. Pull chord through the eyelets and glue one end to the back of the yellow piece. The rest of the chord that is facing the front, loop end over tag and glue chord.
9. Stick tags in pocket. Take piece of yarn and glue one end onto the back of the fabric.
10. Putting the book together: Put the purple and yellow felt back to back. Using the orange floss and red beads, sew the edges together.
