Project by Kym Sells from Roxborough Park, Colo.
Kym creates custom framed scrapbook pages to celebrate life's special moments--a new baby, a wedding, an anniversary and many others. In this project, she creates a baby frame to showcase a newborn's baby picture and announcement. The scrapbook page also includes a realistic-looking monogrammed baby blanket and whimsical baby mobile.
Materials:
unfinished 12" x 12" wood frame
acrylic paint: white, pink, blue, yellow, green
white spray paint
3 unfinished wood alphabet blocks
stamps: teddy bear, giraffe, lamb, star
black solvent-based permanent ink pad
shrink plastic sheet
permanent markers
alphabet beads
plastic colored beads
embroidery thread
3 pink buttons
artistic wire
1" wood disc
pink felt sheet
12" of 1-1/2" wide pink satin ribbon
3 sheets patterned 12" x 12" paper
1 sheet pink card stock
rub-on letters
rub-on phrases
acid-free double-sided tape
hot glue gun
acid-free glue
baby photo
computer & scanner
photo paper
scissors
foam board
eyelet punch
Steps:
1. Start by scanning a photo into computer. Enlarge the photo and print it out in color with soft edges.
2. Recreate the baby announcement by redoing the font and applying a watermark phrase behind the announcement, reading: "It's a Girl." Print it out.
3. Select an assortment of scrapbook papers for background and matting for baby announcement. Put down the 12" x 12" base paper first and build your composition, using double-sided tape for attaching.
4. Layer the baby announcement onto the double mat. Place three buttons with thread onto mat.
5. Crop the baby picture.
6. Create a miniature baby blanket using felt and satin ribbon. Cut the fabric into a triangle.
7. Fold satin ribbon to make a blanket corner. Lay it along the edges of the felt blanket and cut off excess. Glue ribbon into place along the edge.
8. Use pink card stock to make a same-sized backing for the felt baby blanket. Glue backing into place.
9. Monogram name onto the ribbon using rub on letters. Adhere blanket into position on background paper.
10. To create a baby mobile" Stamp animal figures on shrink paper. Color with markers and cut out each image. Use an eyelet punch to create a hole in the top.
11. Heat in the oven at 325 F degrees for 2 minutes to shrink them to miniature sizes.
12. Thread animals with silver wire and add some colored beads. Insert the wires into holes on a small wooden disc (painted white if you choose) as the center.
13. Attach the mobile to the page using double-sided foam tape squares to give some dimension and make it look like the animals are floating.
14. Create a baby bracelet from lettered beads and thread. Apply to the base with dimensional glue.
15. Use rub-on letter phrases to place a phrase directly onto the background paper.
16. Paint unfinished wooden frame white. Let dry. Mix pink acrylic paint with water and apply over the white to do a wash.
17. Cut thin strips of foam board and use them to line the back of the wooden frame. This will create a shadowbox effect.
18. Remove the metal framing prongs and reposition them to allow for the dimensional scrapbook page.
19. Cut building blocks in half with an electric saw.
20. Spray paint blocks white. Paint raised letter with acrylic paint. Let dry.
21. Adhere the letters to the corner of the frame with hot glue.
22. Place scrapbook page inside the frame and enjoy.
