Project by Erika Finney from Nashville, Tenn.Erika Finney creates an adorable wine stopper shaped like a pear.
Materials:
clay
under glaze ceramic paint:
- light green
- medium green
- brown
glossy ceramic finish paint
small paintbrushes
cork from a wine bottle with wooden dowel attached
epoxy glue
kiln
fireproof gloves
plastic wrap
Steps:
1. Roll clay into a ball. Compact it tightly so there are no air bubbles.
2. Mold the clay ball into a pear shape (figure A).3. Push a wood dowel into bottom of the clay pear and create a larger hole with your finger (figure B). This hole needs to be bigger prior to firing because there is a nine-percent shrinkage rate when the clay is fired.
4. Allow to dry for two days with plastic draped over it.
5. Fire the clay to bisque in a kiln for eight to 10 hours. Wearing fireproof gloves remove the clay from the kiln.
6. When cool, paint the clay with under glazes in desired colors. Two shades of green under glaze for the pear and brown under glaze for the stem (figure C). Let dry. Coat with a glossy glaze finish. 7. Fire again in the kiln. Remove and let cool.
8. Insert the wood portion of cork into the hole to check the fit. Adjust if necessary.
9. Place two small drops of epoxy glue into the hole (figure D). Press the wood dowel into the hole and hold for three minutes.Enjoy your funky fruit wine stopper!
