Steps:1. Cut a piece of paper sized to accommodate the size of clock face and secure it to your work surface with lightweight masking tape.
2. Position the first stencil layer on paper and secure it with lightweight masking tape (figure A). Place pieces of tape under registration marks and paint them. Elements within the theorem stencil can be arranged to an enlarged or reduced image to fit the clock face (figure B).
3. Prepare a palette of black, medium and light gray. Paint layers of stencil in gray tones, using the photo for guidance (figure C).
4. Preheat your oven to 250 F degrees and place the painting on a cookie sheet. When oven is preheated, put a test strip of paper in it and check after about 8 or 10 minutes. Continue checking until satisfied with coloring. Put finished painting in the oven and use the test strip timetable as your guide. DO NOT LEAVE AREA--think of this step as babysitting your art.
5. Remove from oven and let cool. When cooled, a sealer or antique finish may be applied, if desired (figure D).
6. Sand and prepare wood surface for paint. Apply a light-colored acrylic paint with a sponge brush and allow to dry.
7. Apply a nice, even coat of crackle finish with a clean, dry sponge brush, and let dry.
8. Using a clean sponge brush, apply an even coat of black acrylic paint. Move quickly and evenly--be careful not to over stroke in this step. Cracks should begin to appear almost at once (figure E). Allow to dry thoroughly.
9. Following the manufacturer's instructions for permanent adhesion, apply the antiqued grisaille painting to the clock face.
10. Insert the clock mechanism according to the manufacturer's instructions. Insert the battery, and hey--it's time to go!
