Materials:

1 yard each of 2 or 3 different fabrics
fine line chalk marker
rotary cutter
large mat
ruler

Steps:

1. Mark off an 18" x 21" area in the center of the mat with the mat's grid lines as the perimeter with chalk or an erasable medium.

2. Fold a yard of fabric into quarters by folding it lengthwise (as it is folded on a bolt of fabric) and then fold it across the width. Press folds with an iron.

3. True up the folded fabric to 18" x 21" and position it within the perimeter indicated on the mat (figure A).

4. Cut across and through the fabric, parallel to and nine inches from the long unfolded edge (figure B). Do not disturb the fabric on the mat. Cut through the fabric again, parallel to and nine inches from the short, unfolded edge (figure C). With chalk, mark the 9-inch cutting lines on the mat for subsequent cutting.

5. Unfolded, the cut fabric will yield: Four 9-inch corner squares, Two 9" x 18" border rectangles, Two 9" x 24" border rectangles and One 18" x 24" center (figure D). Repeat folding and cutting for additional yardage.
