Oversized Teapots

Evan Jones of Dania Beach, Fla., was introduced to pottery in college. But, it wasn't until a few years ago after a life-changing dream that he rekindled his passion for ceramics. And now he's doing anything but throwing ordinary pottery. He's found a way to put a unique spin on a basic teapot by creating them larger than life.

Materials:

stoneware clay
stoneware glazes
potter's wheel
kiln
paper and pencil
ribs

1. Sketch scaled drawings of a teapot vessel in order to determine the size and shape of each section and the required amount of clay for each section.

2. Prepare clay balls and throw each section. Set aside to harden (figure A).

3. Pull a 50-inch 35 lb. handle for the teapot. Set aside to harden.

4. Prepare balls and throw spout. Set aside to harden (figure B).

5. Assemble sections into a finished bowl form.

6. Measure for lid and throw lid. Set aside to harden (figure C).

7. Attach the spout and apply hand-built details like the thumb tabs and ribbons (figure D).

8. Apply the handle and let harden. Apply hand-built details (figure E).

9. Trim the lid to fit the top of the teapot and apply hand-built details.

10. Add hand built details to the side of the teapot and around the collar of the lid.

11. Drill out drying holes inside the teapot handle.

12. Place the teapot in an electric kiln and bisque fire.

13. Remove the teapot from the bisque kiln and apply the glaze (figures F and G).

14. Place the teapot in the gas kiln and glaze fire.
