Materials and Tools:

grass patterned scrapbook paper
3 sheets patterned paper for "matting"
3 photographs
photo-safe adhesive
scissors
1/8" wide quilling paper
quilling tool (Twirling Wand)
white glue
6 wiggle eyes

Basic Quilling Instructions

Loose Coil:

1. Tear a paper strip to the desired length (a torn end will glue down more invisibly than a cut end).

2. Thread the end of a paper strip through the slot in the metal tip of the quilling tool. Slide the tool to the very end of the paper strip and twirl once away from you to secure the paper.

3. Press the tip of the tool lightly against the pad of your other thumb. Twirl the tool away from you. Use your index and middle fingers to help guide the paper.

4. Keep twirling until you reach the end of the strip. Give the tool a quarter twist back toward you. Gently wiggle the tool and pull it out of the coil.

5. Set the coil on a table and release it. The tight coil will spring into a loose coil.

6. Pick it up (adjust the size if necessary) and put a tiny dot of glue on the inside of the strip end. Press the tail down and hold for 5 seconds to let the glue dry.

Tight Coil:

4. Keep twirling until you’ve got a nice fat coil with a tiny tail hanging free. Give the wand a quarter twist toward you. Gently wiggle the wand and pull it out of the coil.

5. Use a toothpick to put a TINY dot of glue on the inside of the tail. Press the tail down and hold for 5 seconds to let the glue dry.

Multicolor Coil:

To make a multicolor coil, glue a strip of one color to the end of strip of another color; use as many colors as you want and twirl as usual.

Curling and Waving Strips:

Tight Curls: Twirl the end of a strip of paper with your tool. Wiggle the tool out gently and you will have a tight curl.

Loose Curls: Curl the strip with the tool and then use your fingers to stretch the curl out into a looser curl.

Steps:

1. Cut each of the three patterned papers 1/2 inch wider and 1/2 inch longer than the photo you are mounting. Put a small amount of photo-safe adhesive on the back of the photo at each corner and center the photo on the patterned paper; this will give you a 1/4-inch mat-like border all around.

To make the sheep:

2. Twirl a 6-inch strip into a loose coil and shape into a gumdrop for the head. Twirl a 4-inch strip into a loose coil and shape into a teardrop ear.

3. Twirl ten 6-inch strips into loose coils for the body. Glue them together into an oval shape that is slightly flat at one end.

4. Twirl a 4-inch strip into a loose coil and shape into a teardrop for the tail. For the hooves, twirl two 4-inch strips into loose coils and shape into tulips.

5. Finish the sheep by gluing the head to the flattened side of the body and the tail to the other side. Glue the ear into place on the body. Glue the wiggle eye onto the head and add the hooves at the bottom.

For the pig:

6. Twirl a 24-inch strip into a loose coil and shape into a gumdrop. Twirl two 4-inch strips into tight coils. Glue them together for a nose.

7. For the ears, glue a 3-inch strip of dark pink to the end of a 3-inch strip of light pink. Starting at the dark pink end, twirl a loose coil. Shape into a teardrop. Repeat for the second ear.

8. Finish the pig by gluing the ears and nose to the head and adding the wiggle eyes.

To make the chicken:

9. Twirl an 18-inch strip into a small loose coil for the head. Accordion-fold a 3/4-inch strip into a beak shape. Glue onto the head.

10. For the comb, accordion-fold a 1-1/4-inch strip and glue to the top of the head.

11. Twirl a 24-inch strip into a loose coil and shape into a gumdrop for the body.

12. To make legs: Fold a 2-inch strip in half. Fold the ends down to make a small "M" shape. Fold the ends up to form three small peaks with long sides. Place a tiny dot of glue between each fold to form the toes; then glue the long sides together to make the leg. Make a small tab at the top of the leg and glue the leg to the curved side of the body. Repeat for the second leg.

13. Finish the chicken by gluing the head to the body and adding a wiggle eye.

To make the cow:

14. Twirl a 24-inch strip into a loose coil and shape into a gumdrop for the head. Twirl two 4-inch strips into tight coils. Glue them together and then glue them into place on the head for the nose.

15. Twirl two 5-inch strips into loose coils and shape into wings. Glue one at each end of the flat side of the head for horns.

16. Twirl two 6-inch strips into loose coils and shape into teardrops. Glue them just below the horns as ears.

17. Twirl an 8-inch strip into a loose coil and shape into a duck foot. Stack it on the head between the horns and glue it in place as hair/bangs.

18. Glue a 24-inch strip to the end of another 24-inch strip and twirl into a large loose coil. Shape into a rectangle for the body.

19. To make cow spots, twirl some random length strips into loose coils, squish into odd shapes, and insert them into the body. Glue the spots in place.

20. For the udder, twirl a 6-inch strip into a loose coil and shape into a gumdrop. Glue three 2-inch tight coils underneath.

21. Use a 6-inch strip to make an accordion-fold leg and foot-shaped strip for the tail (as you did in the leg instructions for the chicken). Make a tab at the end for gluing.

22. For the legs, twirl two 7-inch strips into loose coils and shape into long thin triangles.

23. For hooves, twirl two 6-inch strips into loose coils and shape into tulips. Glue one to the bottom of each leg.

24. Finish the cow by gluing the head to the short side of the body. Glue the tail to the opposite side. Glue the legs to the bottom of the body, one at each end. Glue the udder to the body just in front of the back leg.

25. To make a bull: Leave off the bangs and the udder and add a nose ring. You can make the nose ring by wrapping a 6-inch strip around a pencil and gluing the end down.

26. Finish the page: Arrange the "matted" photos on your background paper and attach them with photo-safe adhesive. Use white glue to attach your twirled creations to the page.

Detailed instructions for the rooster and many other animals can be found in the book Twirled Paper by Jacqueline Lee.
