Steps:
- Decide on African patterns to be featured in the coat design and stitch together (figure A). Check out design books in a local library for pattern ideas (African, Japanese etc).
- Transfer the coat pattern onto muslin fabric and try it on to ensure a correct fit. Then, transfer the coat pattern on examination room paper and transfer marking lines (center front line, buttonholes etc).
- Cut out whimsical fabric motifs (pigs) from African fabrics.
Stitch appliqued pigs (or desired motif) onto a base of hand-dyed fabrics (figure B).
Arrange the appliqued pigs onto the paper coat pattern (figure C).
Divide the paper coat pattern into quilting sections with a marker (figure D).
Continue filling in any empty spaces on the paper pattern with fabric selections (figure E).
Stitch a section of fabric selections together (figure F).
Pin and stitch two units together right sides together until each section is completed.Place each stitched unit on the original muslin pattern (figure G) along the center front line until all the muslin fabric is covered.
Pin and stitch the units together on the muslin fabric (similar to foundation piecing) with a 1/4-inch seam. Stitch one unit at a time to the muslin.Cut a fabric strip to cover the front center seam (figure H).Add desired embellishments.Complete the construction of the coat with a lining, collar, buttons etc.
