Pabst Mansion Block

This block represents Pabst Mansion in Milwaukee, Wis.,— a Flemish Renaissance Revival-style mansion that was home to beer baron Captain Frederick Pabst.

Designer Tom Russell examined elements from Pabst Mansion to fashion this contemporary block. Watch the video to learn more about the elements that gave life to this design.

Materials and Tools:

Restore America printed quilt pattern - Discontinued
fusible webbing
thread for satin stitching – pink, red, orange
green pearle cotton for stem stitch and lazy daisy stitch
fabrics
- pieced block 4" x 16" light green (22), 1 fat quarter turquoise (3), scraps orange-red (15) and red (24)
- fan - 1 fat eighth yellow-orange (4), 4" x 18" each (orange) 17 and orange-brown (11)

Cutting:

    Note: Number and letter notations are from the printed pattern. Unfortunately the pattern has been discontinued.

  • From yellow-orange (4), cut three 4" x 6" pieces (A1, B1, C1), three
    3" x 4" pieces (A6, B6, C6), D.

  • From orange (17), cut three 1" x 6-1/2" strips (A2, B2, C2), two 1/2" x 4" strips (F1, F3), three 1" x 3-1/2" strips (A5, B5, C5), two 1/2" x 3" strips (E1, E3), three 1" x 2" strips (A8, B8, C8).

  • From orange brown (11), cut three 1" x 6-1/2" strips (A3, B3, C3), two 1/2" x 4" strips (F2, F4), three 1" x 3-1/2" strips (A4, B4, C4), two 1/2" x 3" strips (E2, E4), three 1" x 2" strips (A7, B7, C7).

  • From light green (22), cut 2-1/8" X 2-1/2" (G), 3-1/8" X 4-1/2" (J),
    2-1/2" X 6" (L, V).

  • From turquoise (3), cut 2-1/8" X 4-1/2" (H), 1-1/2" X 6-1/2" (I), 3-3/8" X 10-1/2" (K), 7" X 12-1/2" (M).

  • From orange-red (15), cut N, P, Q, R, S, Y.

  • From red (24), cut O, T, U, W, X.

Steps:

1. Fan - Top Section A: Using paper foundation piecing patterns, position A1 and A2. Stitch, trim, and finger press open. Repeat for A3-8. Repeat to make Middle Section B
and Bottom Section C.

2. Join Top, Middle, and Bottom Sections as shown. Set in D. Remove paper and press.

3. Position E pieces on fan, orange pieces to top, and trim ends at an angle to fit. Fuse. Repeat with F pieces.

4. Pieced block: Join light green G and turquoise H. Following diagram, add I-M pieces in order. Press.

5. Follow diagram to place pieces N-T. Fuse in position.Add pieces U-Y and fuse.

6. Appliqué fan to pieced block. Trim excess from behind fan.

7. Machine satin stitch along edges in pink, red, and orange.

8. Stem stitch along swirls in green. Add lazy daisy stitches along bottom swirl.
