8. Stitch the prepared applique area (figure G). Do not stitch through to the backing, merely stitch to adhere the top layer to the batting. I used six strands of cotton and a large running stitch. 9. Using safety pins prepare to hold the complete sandwich, including backing, for quilting.
10. I hand quilted kitty in an echo style, without marking. I simply stitched in rounds about an inch apart using floss and stitches to match the applique. Quilt right to the edges of the top layer.
11. Time for the border. I cut strips of black print fabric 2-1/2-inches wide and auditioned them around the edges of the top layer trying to create color and line balance. The sides were pieced, the top and bottom simply one fabric each.
Cut the sides 13-1/2" x 2-1/2". Pin each to the side edges of the top layer, right sides together and raw edges aligned. Stitch/quilt in place - I used my walking foot here.
Cut the top and bottom 14-1/2" x 2-1/2". Pin each to the side edges of the top layer, right sides together and raw edges aligned. Stitch/quilt in place as before.
12. Using black embroidery floss, quilt around the inner and outer edges of the border to hold in place.
