Scrap Mosaic

Tips on how to utilize small scraps to create a mosaic accent for your scrapbooking pages.

Guest designer Tricia Morris suggests this project to work on at crops where distractions make it difficult to concentrate. The technique can be a bit time-consuming--great to work on when chatting with fellow croppers!

Materials:

assorted papers or scraps
12" x 12" Blue Crackle Print
double-sided adhesive
platinum embossing powder
dry paintbrush
heat tool
scissors
craft knife

Steps:

  1. Cut paper scraps into strips of varying widths. Remember: smaller strips are more time-consuming when adhering later.

  2. Next, cut the strips at various angles. Repeat cutting on at least four different colors.

  • Trim a sheet of double-sided adhesive to measure 6" x 9".

  • Arrange the small pieces onto a sheet of adhesive in a mosaic fashion (figure A). Do not allow the pieces to touch. Cover the entire sheet of adhesive, leaving spaces in between pieces.

  • Pour embossing powder over the project, and use your finger to rub the powder into the exposed adhesive. Brush off the excess powder, and heat with a craft tool (figure B).

  • Use a sharp craft knife and ruler to cut an opening in the mosaic to fit the photo. Measure and cut a black photo matte 1/4" larger than the mosaic frame with the opening for the photo in the middle.

  • Add journaling and a title to the page.
