Instructions provided courtesy of quilt designer Sue Spargo.

Materials:
fabrics:
28 challenge fabric scraps
2 hand-dyed wool fabrics for background and borders
straw needles
50/3 cotton thread
#24 Chenille needles
50/50 wool thread
fusible knit interfacing
#16 topstitching needle for 50/50 wool thread
trade beads

Steps:
Sue Spargo toned down the fabrics by dipping them in a tan dye mixture. To soften the brighter fabrics, she overlaid them with see-through or sheer-type fabrics.

Appliqué

1. Trace appliqué pieces onto the matte side of freezer paper.

2. Cut out the pattern pieces.

3. Iron freezer paper onto the right side of the fabric and cut out adding a 1/4" seam allowance to the cotton pieces.

4. Cut the wool pieces out the size of the freezer paper.

5. Needle turn appliqué the cotton pieces using cotton thread and whipstitch the wool pieces using 50/50 wool thread.

Foundation piecing is prepared on paper or a muslin foundation.
Foundation piecing of flowers (fans)

1. Copy the pattern piece on the foundation piece of your choice.
Paper foundation will be removed and a muslin foundation will remain in the piece. Muslin would be a good choice for working with different weights of fabrics.

2. On the nonprinted side of the paper or muslin place #1 fabric right side up covering the #1 area plus seam allowances.

3. Place #2 fabric piece over #1 with right sides together, turn the paper over and sew along the line between #1 and #2.

4. Make sure you start and stop sewing in the seam allowance. If you shorten your stitch length it will be easier to remove the paper foundation.

5. Continue trimming and pressing after each piece is added.

6. When finished trim the piece adding a 1/4" seam allowance.

7. Remove the paper carefully.
