Shadow Box Pendant

Empty Bindi tins (used to hold decorative Hindu adornments) have become extremely popular for storing beads, jewelry findings, and crafting embellishments. The lids for the containers can be used in an heirloom shadow box pin/pendant.

Condition clay thoroughly by kneading or rolling through the pasta machine for several minutes before starting.

Steps:
1. Select an image that will show nicely through the Bindi lid. Center the base of the tin face-down over the photo and trace around it with a pencil. Cut out the photo with scissors, cutting just inside the pencil line (Figure A).

2. Roll out a 2" x 4" sheet of black clay through the largest setting of the pasta machine. Cut this in half and stack it to make a double thick layer.

Figure C

3. Glue the picture down over the clay with the Crafter's Pick glue. Use the same adhesive to glue a small message written on parchment paper, over the top of the picture (Figure C).

4. Place about 4-5 charms, beads, etc. over the center of the picture. Optional: One or two of the inclusions may be glued down to a small piece of clay that is glued onto the image with the Poly Bonder.

Figure E

5. Apply some Poly Bonder to the edge of the Bindi Lid. Center the lid over the image and press halfway into the clay. Trim away the excess clay with a craft knife (Figure E).

Figure F

6. Glue a 3/4" x 7" strip of black clay that's been rolled through the 4th largest setting of the pasta machine, around the Bindi lid with Poly Bonder (Figure F). It's easiest if a straight edge is glued along the bottom of the pendant and any excess clay is trimmed away from the top edge of the lid with the clay blade.

7. Texture the black clay with a scouring pad. Apply mica powder over the textured clay with your fingertip.

Figure G

8. Cut several flowers using the cutter, from a sheet of violet clay rolled through the 5th largest setting of the pasta machine. Glue these around entire outer edge of the lid with Poly Bonder (Figure G).

Figure H

9. Roll a small black snake of black clay and cut enough tiny sections for each flower. Roll into balls and glue to the center of the flowers. Press a needle tool the black clay balls decorate and help adhesion of the clays (Figure H).

10. Using Poly Bonder, glue a thin strip of white clay rolled through the fifth largest setting of the pasta machine, horizontally across the top third of the pendant back. Be very careful to not apply pressure on the back since the clay can be collapsed into the lid. Glue the pin/pendant finding over the clay strip. Cut another small strip with a "V" in it and glue over the center of the pin bar. Bake on a piece of polyester batting at 275-degrees Fahrenheit for 40 minutes. A chain can then be added for wear as a pendant.
