Today's contributions to the Shoebox were once again viewer versions of previously demonstrated craft projects from our show. This time it was Lila Steineckert's treasure chest that was the inspiration for both.

Diane Trumbauer of Homosassa, Fla., and Jeri Rippon of Spring, Tex. Diane pretty much followed the basic directions that Lila gave as far as construction was concerned, but instead of covering her card stock with paint, she applied decorative paper using spray adhesive and used a different patterned paper for the lining. For accents, she used purple card stock, and instead of the hook-and-loop fastening Lila used, Diane put on a frog fastener and then added small wooden knobs for feet.

Jeri Rippon's version came about out of necessity. Jeri belongs to a stamping club, and the challenge for the month was to do a project using the five of spades card. What made Jeri think of a treasure chest she didn't say, but that's what she made. Only problem was that she used no five of spades to make it. That's where her 12-year-old daughter Amber came to the rescue. Amber decorated the chest with playing cards and, of course, the five of spades was among them. She used dice for the feet.

No treasure chest was involved in the contribution from Shirley Zerrenner, of St. Joseph, Mich., however. Some time ago Shirley sent a letter telling of the characters that she makes using fabric yo-yos. She also included a photograph. Unfortunately the picture was not sharp enough to use on the air but fortunately it was sharp enough to pique our curiosity, and we asked Shirley if she would send us one of her creations. One? She sent a town full...each one more fascinating than the last...little old ladies, a farm boy in overalls, even a Detroit Lions player and a sock monkey. The legs, arms, feet, bodies, heads...everything was a yo-yo! They were extremely clever. Shirley sells her yo-yo characters at craft shows.
