There were some dandy contributions to the Shoebox today, starting with some delightful votive candle boats sent in by Ilene Letterbor of Sheyboygan, Wisc. They were amazingly effective, especially considering the very simple idea. Two pieces of votive paper cut to 2-1/2" x 5-1/2" were stacked on top of each other and joined at each of the short ends in a variety of ways. Some were glued, others were punched and laced (
figure A), some were done with ribbon (
figure B) and others with cording with beads strung on it (
figure C).
Before joining the ends, however, a 3/4-inch-wide strip of card stock was glued or taped along the bottom of each piece of vellum (figure D). It added not only a decorative touch but gave a bit of substance to the vellum. The vellum was then rubber stamped and embossed with various designs (figure E). In some cases, however, decorative vellum was used, so no further designs were necessary...a very pretty and certainly an easy and inexpensive way to decorate a table.
Also in the Shoebox today were some photographs sent in by Staci Miserllian of Neenah, Wisc. Staci had seen the Christmas card segment that Jane Beard did on one of our live holiday shows when Jane made a mini-book pull-out card featuring the twelve days of Christmas in stamps. It was a very clever card that not only delivered the holiday message but could be placed on a mantle for a holiday decoration as well. Staci elaborated on the idea when she used it as the basis for a 30th birthday card for her brother (figure F). Putting numbers on one side of every page and a photo of her brother at different stages of his life on the other side, plus little sayings and memories written, she made a spectacular card for a special occasion. It was small but stretched out to great lengths and delivered many memories along with many laughs.
