Yellow/Orange Blocks1. Cut four 2-1/8 inch strips of fabric #1 (yellow).
2. Cut four 2 inch strips of fabric #2 (red/orange) (figure A).
3. Sew together one strip of each color (#1 and #2) along one of the long sides. Repeat for all four strips resulting in four yellow/orange strip sets.
4. Press the seam toward fabric #1 on two of the strip sets, and toward fabric #2 for the other two strip sets.
5. Place the longest side of template A along the edge of fabric #2 on one of the strip sets (figure B). Cut on both sides of the template. You now have a triangle with a long orange strip (fabric #2) at the bottom, and a narrower yellow strip (fabric #1) at the top. Cut 10 triangles from the strip sets with the seam pressed in one direction and 10 from sets pressed in the opposite direction. Keep sets in separate stacks (figure C).
6. Place one triangle with seams pressed toward the top (toward fabric #1) on top of a triangle with seams pressed toward the bottom, right sides together. Align the edges, and ensure that the seams meet and "lock" properly. Sew from top to bottom along the short side on the right hand side of the triangles. Repeat for the rest of the triangles.
7. Open up the pairs of triangles, and with the longest side toward you, press both seam allowances to the left. Press in the same direction on all the triangle pairs.
8. Place two triangle pairs on top of each other, right sides together. Line up the long edges, make sure that the seams meet and lock. Pin and sew along the long edge. Open up and press the seam in the same direction as the previous seams. Unpick the few stitches of the previous seams in the center to switch pressing direction on the second half of the last seam. Now all the seams "swirl" in the same direction around the block. Repeat for the remainder of the triangles. You will now have five blocks.
Green Blocks
9. Cut three 2-1/8 inch strips from fabric #3 (green), and three 2 inch strips from fabric #4 (blue green).
10. Repeat steps 3 - 8 above, except:
- Replace fabrics #1 and #2 with fabrics #3 and #4 (green and blue green) for the green blocks.
- Sew three strip sets instead of four.
- For step #4, press the seams in opposite directions on the first two strip sets, on the third, press half the length in each direction.
- For step #5, cut eight triangles of each pressing direction.
- For step #8, you will have four blocks instead of five.
