* Olfe uses relatively high-end personal computers, a Gateway desktop and a Dell laptop. These computers have Pentium 4 CPU's (central processing unit) running at fairly high speeds (2.2 and 3.2 GHz), and are equipped with 1 GB of RAM (random-access memory) to handle large files.

Here are a few suggestions, tools and techniques that Olfe utilizes in his whole-cloth quilt designs.

  • The quilts shown by Olfe were designed almost exclusively with two software programs, Adobe Photoshop 7 and Corel's Bryce 5.

  • Olfe creates his designs using PhotoShop 7 and sends them to Men of the Cloth as TIFF files. His designs are printed on polyester poplin by a digital dye sublimation process. Polyester poplin has the weight and feel of cotton poplin and works well for quilting. Olfe's largest whole-cloth quilts featuring this process are 50" x 50".

Note: Men of the Cloth's fees are relatively inexpensive and they will print small lots. In addition, printed fabric can measure up to 52 inches in width and any length, and works well for whole-cloth quilts.

  • Olfe recommends attaching a thin batting and a cotton back to the quilt.

  • For the binding, Olfe uses a solid color commercial cotton fabric for the majority of his quilts.

  • Olfe recommends painting white cotton fabric with transparent textile paints to attain a specific color for the binding and border.

  • Olfe suggests stitching with either colored thread or clear, thin monofilament thread to embellish your whole-cloth quilts.
