Rings That Bind offers a new process in quilt construction. Simple strips sewn into strip sets provide a canvas for cutting arcs that are sewn into rings. The rings, which appear to have been made with many tiny fabric pieces, are sewn onto backing circles then flipped. Quilting and scalloped edges are added to each block individually, before the blocks are assembled. When the blocks are sewn together and topstitched, your quilt is finished!

Materials:
1-1/2 yard backing fabric
3/4 yard interior square fabric
1/8 yard each of eight fabrics from Color Group #1
1/8 yard each of eight fabrics of Color Group #2
2/3 yard of 44-inch wide cotton batting
thread

Important Note - Exact quarter inch seams are crucial to the success of this quilt.

Steps:
Cutting
Background Fabric - Cut four 18" squares, eight 6" x 13" pieces

Interior Square Fabric – Cut four 12-1/2-inch squares

Color Group #1 – Cut two 2-1/2" x fabric width strips, four 1-3/4" x fabric width strips, two 2-1/4" x fabric width strips

Rings
1. Sew the Group #1 strips together to make a strip set (figure A):
- Group 1:
2-1/2 inch, 1-3/4 inch, 1-3/4 inch, 2-1/4 inch*, 2-1/4 inch, 1-3/4 inch, 1-3/4 inch, 2-1/2 inch.
Sew the Group #2 strips together to make a second strip set:

2. Using the Arc-Ease tool, cut 12 arcs from each pieced strip set (figure B).

Figure C
3. Sew four arcs together (figure C)—two rings of Group 1 arcs and two rings of Group 2 arcs—to make a ring. Set aside the remaining arcs for the scalloped edge.

4. Turn under the inside edge of the ring 1/4 inch and press (figure D).

Backing Circle
1. Using the Arc-EaseTM tool, cut a 17-1/2-inch backing circle (figure E) from a folded 18-inch background fabric square.

Figure F
2. Draw a 12-inch square in the center of the wrong side of the backing circle (figure F) to be used as a stitching guideline.

3. Sew the ring to the circle with the right side of the ring facing the wrong side of the backing circle. Place the seam joining the two center pieces of the arcs (both from 2-1/2-inch strips) in the corners of the marked square.

4. Bring the ring around to the other side of the circle (figure G). The ring is similar to a neckline facing in garment construction.

Figure H
5. Stitch in place along the folded edge of the ring. Add the interior square (figure H).

6. Cut four 12-1/2-inch interior squares.

7. Cut four 11-1/2-inch batting squares.

8. Layer the circle, batting and interior square.

Scallops
1. Using the Arc-Ease tool, cut eight scallop pieces from folded 6" x 13" background fabric pieces.

2. Using the Arc-Ease tool, cut eight batting pieces from 3" x 13" batting pieces (figure J).

Figure K
3. Unfold the scallop piece and place it on the backside of the block, matching the fold line to the guide line on the wrong side of the backing circle. The marked line is your stitching line (figure K).

4. Pin the flap from the circular block to the interior square.

Figure L
5. Place the slice of batting onto the scallop piece then bring the two raw edges of the scallop together. The batting will be sandwiched between the two halves of scallop fabric (figure L). This is the outside edge of your quilt.

Figure M
6. Un-sew the center seam of an arc and re-sew the two outer edges together (figure M). Fold under the inner curved edge 1/4 inch.

Figure N
7. Sew the new arc to both outer edges of the scallop (figure N).

Figure O
8. Bring the arc to the right side. This creates a finished edge like a facing (figure O).

9. Stitch in place along the folded edge of the arc.

10. Sew two scallops to each block, placing the scallops on the block according to their position in the finished project.

Figure P
Block Assembly
1. Place two blocks together, backing sides facing (figure P). Match the guide lines carefully.

2. Sew the block pair together along the guide lines.

Figure Q
3. Place two block pairs together in similar fashion and sew them together along the guide lines to make a four block wall hanging.

4. Open and stitch down all of the flaps along the outer edge of the rings (figure Q).
