Doug Spalding returns to make one of his adorable monkey tiles.

Materials:

clay
6" x 4" plaster mold
rubber mallet
cut-off wire
straight edge
pencil
green and orange glazes
ear syringe
black wax pen
kiln

Steps:

1. Press slab of stoneware clay into a 6"x 4" blank mold. Cut off excess clay with cut-off wire.

2. Allow clay to set for roughly one hour. Remove tile from the mold.

3. After tile has dried, bisque fire tile to cone 06 in a kiln.

4. Sketch design in with pencil (figure A).

5. Trace over the pencil lines with black wax (figure B).

6. After the wax has dried, fill in with glazes with an ear syringe (figure C).

7. Fire tile to cone 6 in a kiln.
