Recessed Wall Niches

These homeowners built wall niches to hold their TV and art collection.
Materials:

safety glasses
tape measure
level
carpenter's pencil
stud finder
utility knife
reciprocating saw
hammer
table saw
sandpaper
nail gun
paint brush
wood glue
birch plywood sheets
nails
molding
paint

Steps:

1. Take measurements to decide how many recessed wall niches will fit nicely in your space.

2. Measure the length, height and width of the objects that will be placed in the niches to assure a correct fit.

3. Before you begin, cut a small hole in the wall in the areas you want the niches to make sure there are no hidden wires or plumbling.

4. Consult an electrician to re-route any electricity.

5. Once it has been safely determined that the area is clear of wiring, create a rough opening for the wall niche (figure A).

6. Using a tape measure and level, mark measurements on the wall with a carpenter's pencil.

7. Using a utility knife, score the outlines of the wall niches and to split the paper in the drywall.

8. Using a reciprocal saw, cut out the rough opening for the recessed niche.

9. Using 3/4" birch plywood, build a box that will fit into the rough opening to frame the inside of the wall niches (figure B).

10. Glue the edges of the box to hold the pieces then nail them to hold the seal. Paint or stain as desired.

11. Place the box into the recessed hole and then nail it into place (figure C).

Figure C - If using the niche for a TV, remember to allow room for your cables and wires.
12. If you're putting a TV in the niche, use a spade bit and extender to drill holes through the wood so you'll be able to run cords and wires. Be sure to run and install all wiring before the box is nailed into place.

13. Cut molding to size to create the frame around the niche. Paint or stain as desired.

14. Glue and nail the molding trim around the niche.

15. For any touch ups use painter's tape to avoid mistakes.

16. Install the television and artwork and enjoy.
