Figure A
Materials:

photograph
long, narrow mirror
tape
paint stripper (gel or paste)
fine steel wool
metallic markers (optional)

Steps:

  1. Use a computer program to convert a photograph to a sepia-toned black and white photograph. Soften the edges to look old, and then print it onto photographic paper.
  2. Mark the approximate size of the photograph on the back of the mirror.
  3. Follow the instructions for the paint stripper and apply it to the mirror backing within the marked area. Wait the directed time (the paint should bubble), and then remove the paint. Wipe the area clean.
  4. Use a scraper to remove the mirror residue (figure A). Spray the area with glass cleaner so it stays wet and the glass doesn't scratch, and then continue to remove the silver with fine steel wool. It may help to wrap the steel wool around a spoon to apply pressure and remove the mirror--it doesn't have to be removed perfectly. A little residue on the glass creates a more antique look as does a soft and uneven edge around the area.
  5. Hold the photograph up to the stripped area to see if enough has been removed. If not, repeat until the area is large enough.
  6. Clean the area with glass cleaner, dry well. Tape the photograph in place and turn the mirror over. Wash the mirror well with glass cleaner.
  7. Use permanent metallic markers to embellish the mirror and create a metallic frame around the photograph.
  8. Place the mirror and cardboard backing back in the frame.
