Host Cindy Piccoli shows how to transform an old ladder-back chair using thrift-store neckties to redo the seat.

Materials:

8 to 10 men's ties
staple gun
scissors
decorative upholstery tacks (optional)
ladder-back chair

Steps:

  1. Look for inexpensive ties in your local thrift store, keeping in mind that narrow styles are easiest to use.
  2. Remove the seat completely, sand and repaint if desired.
  3. Lay the ties out on the seat to determine placement and the number needed. To avoid open spaces, place one tie with the wide end toward the seat back, and the next with the narrow toward the back (the same principle applies for side to side placement).
  4. Using a staple gun, fasten ties to the back rung of the chair, pull tightly, and staple the other end to the front seat rung.
  5. Next, on one side rung, attach ties on the underside.
  6. Then weave the side ties in and out of the taut ones. Be sure to pull them tightly before securing to the opposite rung.
  7. Cut off any excess tie material.
  8. Decorative upholstery tacks add a nice touch along the front and sides of the chair.
