Carol Duvall's first Father's Day gift suggestion was sent in by viewer Liz Wiltshire of Pennsauken, N.J., who had seen a segment that Duvall had featured some time ago when she decorated smooth beach stones with decorative tissue paper. Wiltshire thought this would be something that even her daughter's day care center children could make, so she gathered up the materials, described to daughter Kate how things were done and sure enough, with a little help from the grown-ups, the little pre-schoolers were able to make very handsome stone paperweights for their dads for Father's Day. For those who missed the original segment, here is a quick review.

Materials:
decorative tissue paper with designs appropriate for father
white glue
smooth beach stones from the beach, import store, or nursery
brush for applying glue (foam brush or sponge for little ones)

Steps:

  1. Cut or tear tissue into pieces that will fit smoothly on the stone.
  2. Mix glue with just enough water to make it easy to brush on.
  3. Apply a generous amount of glue / water to the stone, lay a piece of tissue in place, then brush over it with fingers or brush to smooth it out. Continue applying glue and tissue pieces until stone is covered, then coat the entire surface with another coating of the glue / water mixture. Allow to dry thoroughly.
