Cardboard Walls

Smart Solutions : Episode SSL-1011 -- More Projects »
Designer Jonathan Fong demonstrates how to cover plain walls with corrugated cardboard for an earthy and elegant look in any room of the house.

Initial Tips

  • Buy B-flute corrugated cardboard in rolls that are about 350 feet long. They cost about $25 and will cover approximately four walls in an average-size room.

  • This technique is easier and cheaper than painting, plus it requires no wall preparation. It also covers imperfections in the surface you are covering.

staple gun
scissors

Steps:

  1. Hang strips of cardboard vertically from the ceiling to baseboard, with each strip just touching the one next to it. Staple at the top, but not the bottom.

  • Cut strips of cardboard the width of the wall and weave each piece over and under the vertical strips (figure A). If a strip is too short, cut it so that it ends behind one of the vertical strips. Staple it in place.

  • Start another length of cardboard behind the same strip and staple it. Cut to the proper length and staple down the end.

  • If a section of wall is stained or damaged, simply cut out the damaged square and replace with a fresh square, stapled in place.

  • To make the cardboard fit around a window, hang the strips in the large weave pattern, and then cut around the window or door to fit (figure B).

  • Dust with a feather duster periodically to keep clean.
