Dimensional Collage Frame

Dawn Shute lives with her husband, two sons and her son’s girlfriend on a ranch in Santa Maria, Calif., and each one of them is an artist. She says that with all the artistic energy in her home you can’t help but want to create something all the time! Dawn dabbles in everything from needlepoint and cross-stitch to decoupage and rubber-stamping, but it’s her dimensional framed collages that really have her creative juices flowing these days.

Materials:

8" x 10" canvas board
images from magazine pages
acrylic paint
sparkle paint
oil pastels
glaze pens
dimensional paint
assorted crystals and rhinestones
white glue
soft gel matte medium
glitter glue
upholstery nails
copper water heater strapping*
tin snips
hammer
awl
foam core
scrap piece of board
1" x 2" wood cut to size
1/4" backing board
aluminum tape
stylus
pattern tracing wheel
texture wheels
curvy ruler
paper towels
India ink
paintbrushes
3/4" nails
clamps
small piece of muslin
scissors
jigsaw
safety glasses
*Copper water heater strapping includes slots for fastening.

Steps:

1. Choose selected images from magazines, in this case, an eye and a frame for the eye. Cut out images for your dimensional collage frame (figure A).

2. Lay the magazine frame onto the canvas board and lightly pencil around it.

3. Adhere the eye image to the frame image with gel medium (figure B). Let dry.

4. Paint the canvas board from the pencil line to the edge of the canvas board with acrylic paints. Add color with the oil pastels. Lightly apply sparkle paint to add shimmer to the board (figure C).

5. Adhere the framed eye to the canvas board lining up the edges with the pencil line on the canvas board. Smooth out any air bubbles with your hands (figure D). Let dry.
