Project by Amy E. Thompson from Boulder, Colo.

About a year ago, Amy spent some time in New Orleans, where she became inspired by a local boutique that sold vintage lampshades. She has always considered herself crafty and decided to do some research to learn how to make such projects herself. In this project, she makes a vintage-style lampshadem starting with a plain wire frame, the lining, decorative fabrics, beads and fringe--all of which are hand sewn.

Materials:

wire lampshade frame
seam binding
needle/thread
straight pins
scissors
measuring tape
ironing board & iron
fabric glue
fabric for lining
decorative fabrics
decorative trim
fringe
decorative items: beads, jewelry pieces, etc.
Rit dye

Steps:

1. Wrap entire lampshade frame tightly in seam binding .This gives you something to which to sew.

2. Measure and cut fabric for lining. Pin lining fabric to lamp and sew. Cut excess fabric off.

3. Cut decorative fabrics of choice and attach to lamp in same way.

4. Making rosettes: Measure and cut chiffon for rosettes. Fold edge over 3 inches and sew running stitch. Wrap thread around pom-pom and tie in knot.

5. Dye to desired color and let dry (optional).

6. Stretch rosette across panel and pin into place. Sew as before. Cut off excess fabric.

7. Cut decorative trim and glue onto shade to hide stitches. Use pins to secure and let dry. Then remove pins.

8. Measure circumference of bottom of lampshade and cut fringe.

9. Dye fringe to desired color, if using rayon fringe. Pin fringe on and sew as before.

10. Add final trim around bottom, covering the stitching of the fringe.

11. Add any additional final touches (beads, jewels, ribbons, etc.).
