Project by Valery Guignon from Dallas, Texas.

Valery makes a beautiful lamp from a bent and welded metal frame covered with hand-dyed silk fabric. Held in place on the silk fabric is a stitched nylon tulle covering that contains painted rocks, tumbled glass, charms, seashells, bits of lame silk, etc.

Materials:

copper-covered steel rod
metal washer
brass for brazing
furniture paint
dyed silk fabrics
painted rocks
tumbled glass
seashells
brass charms
metallic lame fabric
button-weight thread
sewing needle
quilting pins
scissors
nylon tulle
metal chain
electric cord with switch and plug
lock washer
steel nip
stamped steel locknut
candelabra base
candelabra bulb
candle cup
thin project wire

Steps:

1. Cut a metal rod into about 11 4-inch pieces.

2. Braze star pieces closed with acetylene torch. Braze two stars. Bend the 1/8-inch steel rod into two matching star shapes. Piece together using the 4-inch connectors

3. Braze on washer and holder to hold the lamp parts in place.

4. Paint finished frame with spray paint.

5. Measure star off frame and cut out lining silk and tulle pieces. Pin and machine stitch together, leaving opening at top.

6. Drop in filler items a little at a time and stitch in place. When whole star is filled and stitched closed, pin to frame. Baste on frame.

7. Cut a 4-inch-wide strip long enough to surround star, leaving opening at bottom and top. Hem edges with zigzag stitch. Pin onto frame. Sew fabrics onto the frame by hand.

8. Assemble lamp workings into lamp. Measure length of chain needed to hang from ceiling and cut. Sew two ends of chain onto the silk and frame.

9. Cut a piece of wire and wire the chain ends to the lamp cord. Hang and plug in the lamp.
