Fashion expert Beez McKeever demonstrates how to make a laundry bag out of an old pair of jeans (see photo).
The bag could also be use as an overnight bag for sleepovers or camp. Whether or not that bag is actually used for laundry, it also works great when a sleep over comes up, or they head off to camp for the week.
Materials:
pair of old jeans
sharp scissors
sewing machine*
rope
Steps:
- Cut off each leg at the inside seam of a pair of old jeans, from the cuff to the top.
- Use a sewing machine to sew up the old seam, making sure to only sew together the right leg and the left leg.
- Turn the pants over, and do the same with the front. When this step is completed, your old pants should look like a denim tube.
- If the tube looks a little triangular, don't worry about it. Just sew up each side of the pants, and cut off the bell shapes on each side.
- Sew across the bottom to seal the bag.
- Slide a rope through the belt loops to make the drawstring, and voila! You've recycled, used your creativity and likely made a young person very happy with a brand new bag!
- You can now add pockets from other old jeans so that there are a bunch of pouches on the outside to carry things.
- You can also allow your child to decorate the outside of the bag with paint pens and other decorative items.
* Note: Adult supervision or help is very important for this step! Sewing machines are great, but they can be dangerous if used incorrectly.
Here's another great idea for making use of those old jeans:
Make a denim pocket to hold pens, pencils and various other items. Carefully clip out the pocket from your favorite old jeans, and get a fray running on the side. Toss the detached pocket in the wash with your laundry. Attach some magnetic strips to the back of the pocket, and use as a fun holder on any magnetic surface.
