Figure D
Decorator Kelly Roland Warren demonstrates creative refurbishing techniques that give life to furniture that might otherwise be discarded.

Materials:

old wooden chest
old shutter
screwdriver or drill
sandpaper
white latex paint
clip-on light or other source of light
decorative
drawer pulls
craft paint
adhesive rub-on design
Popsicle stick
plug-in on/off switch from home centers

Steps:

  1. Measure the size of a missing drawer in an old wooden chest, then find a shutter that fits the size of the missing drawer (figure A).

  2. Screw in the shutter on each end of the drawer opening.

  3. If necessary, sand the surface until smooth. Paint with white latex paint, then let dry.

  4. Clip on or otherwise attach a light inside the drawer (figure B).

  5. Put on decorative drawer pulls, perhaps crystal (figure C), then paint on a light floral pattern.

  6. An alternative to painting is to use adhesive rub-ons. Apply these by rubbing with a Popsicle stick (figure D).
