Here's a trade secret from Susan Welch Heeney of Nashville, Tenn.:

Storage is almost always in short supply in kitchens today. Create your own "butler's pantry" by adding shallow shelving to a hallway between your kitchen and garage or laundry room. All you need is approximately 12 inches of space. A counter top and lower storage can be created by installing 12-inch deep, wall-hung cabinets on the floor. Upper open shelving is perfect for canned goods. To create this space, build a raised, recessed toe kick and install the wall cabinets on the floor, on top of the raised platform. It's also an ideal place to store small appliances such as a microwave, bread machine or blender.
