Steps:

1. Slice off a section of clay from package and roll out to approximately 1/8 inch thick.

2. Bend the knife into a half circle (figure A) and cut out desired shape (figure B).

3. Roll a marble-sized ball into a log and place over shape, curling and swirling as desired (figure C).

4. To make the roses: Roll a marble-sized ball into a cone for center of flower (figure D).

5. For petals: Working with pea-sized balls, flatten between fingers and stretch. Pinch edges of each petal with fingers to form realistic ruffed edges (figure E). Wrap petals around cone. Repeat this process for desired size of rose (figure F). Trim bottom of cone with scissors. Repeat for additional rose(s).

6. To make leaves. Flatten pea-sized ball and shape into teardrop. Pinch edges to flatten very thin. Draw in vein marks with clay shaper upwards toward point (figure G). Pinch bottom of leaf to give shape (figure H).

7. Dab a drop of water to desired area on brooch for rose to attach. Dab a drop of water to bottom of each rose and leaf. Arrange roses and leaves (figure I).

8. Scrape off small shavings of clay and add under roses for filler.

9. Wet brush with small amount of water and rub onto watercolor crayons in desired rose color. Gently brush color onto rose. Color will slightly tint the rose, creating a wash effect. This is very forgiving and tends to be self-shading (figure J).

10. Apply color to leaves using various colors of green. Hint: If color is too light, apply more. If too dark. rinse brush and lift off color with clean brush. Wipe off excess color on paper towel and repeat until desired color is achieved.

11. Allow clay to dry overnight.

12. When completely dry, glue on pin back with epoxy glue.
