Grid Earrings


Melissa Borrell creates a grid mock up for her earrings, prints out a pattern on the computer, burnishes silver, has the pattern and silver etched and then solders the components together to create her grid-shaped earrings.

26-gauge silver sheet (photo-etched with rectangle links: 80 pieces per pair of earrings)*
steel wool
metal files
vise
welding torch
pickle solution in heated slow cooker
brass brush
silver tubing for earring finding
21-gauge silver wire for earring post
24-gauge fine silver for rivets
paintbrush
flux
silver solder
computer
printer
tube cutter
jeweler's saw
wire cutters
needle nose pliers
dark safety glasses
draw tongs
*The metal and the printed drawing are sent to a photo-etching company where they create a film of the shape and then transfer the image to the silver sheet. Acid is applied to the metal to cut through the metal—cutting out many small parts on one sheet.
