Faux Turquoise Nuggets
Materials:
2-oz block of art translucent or Fimo Art polymer clay
2-oz block of turquoise polymer clay
optional: small amounts of polymer clay in turquoise, mint green, royal blue, and forest green
leftover, dried-out crumbs of polymer clay in black, metallic black, bronze, dark brown, ochre, olive green and other earth tones as desired
tablespoon of dirt or dirt/sand mixture
craft knife or tissue-slicing blade
nutmeg grater
needle tool or toothpick
paper plate
Steps:
- Roll together equal parts of turquoise and translucent polymer clay colors and blend well. Blend in additional shades of blues and green if desired. Roll into turquoise nugget shape or shapes.
- Crumble or grate dried bits of earth tone clay onto a paper plate.
- To add dark veins to the turquoise nuggets, gingerly roll the nuggets into this mixture. Don't cover the nugget evenly or heavily. Sprinkle the specks over the bead if desired so you don't get too much coverage.
- Work each nugget so that it has some dents and dings and is organically shaped. Add more multi-color powdery clay crumbs in some of the creases to suggest a matrix. Add some dirt in this step to enhance the natural, mineral effect.
- Use the needle tool to poke a hole in the bead. Bake as directed by the polymer clay manufacturer.
Faux Pearl NuggetsMaterials:
2-oz block of polymer clay in desired pearl color
pearlescent embossing powder or pearlescent antiquing foil
Steps:
- Condition clay, mixing colors if desired to get bluish gray or pink tint.
- If using antiquing foil, roll out clay with a brayer and press foil onto a flattened sheet to get the pearl effect. If using embossing powder, proceed to step 3.
- Pinch off a bit of clay and roll it into a ball-shaped bead and poke a hole through the bead with the needle tool.
- Roll beads around in embossing powder. Skip this step if using antiquing foil.
- Bake as directed by polymer clay manufacturer.
